About this deal

Thank you for this article. Last year we bought a used wood stove that looks like it was homemade (no manufacturer identifier markings). They did a good job but I want to add gasket around the door to make it better. I will have to mark on the stove to determine the size of rope I need as there are no channels. Thank you again for the info and help. This is done for the two parts of the plate surrounding the flue pipe and straight lengths are fitted to fill any gaps. Fibre cement can be bought at builders merchants and it is most often used in strips of 100 or 150mm wide as a tile undercloak to roof verges. Clean up any spills of excess concrete immediately. Use a rag with soap and water to clean up any spills or stains. Avoid using acid-based cleaners. Experts recommend using masking tape around the top and bottom of the seal so that a clean straight edge of the heat resistant cement can be applied and exposed to the heat. Pull the putty knife over the openings with the cement side facing down. Place the tip down against your appliance and pull the knife down slowly, taking care to ensure that cement application is as smooth as possible. Don't apply too much at once — if you need to apply more, you can apply a second coat. [8] X Research source

Talk to your supplier about the type of wood burner you need and about the flue liner you need to serve it. The efficiency of the fire will depend on putting the right wood burner into the right opening and using the correct flue. If they do not all match up you could be wasting a great deal of energy. If you are NOT fitting a liner, but installing a clip-together chimney system (twin-wall), then you will secure your twin-wall adaptor to your vitreous (or to your stove if directly attached) using fire cement or fireproof webbing (webbing is so much neater and more effective). Is this dangerous (I have a carbon monoxide detector anyway) and how much roughly could I expect to pay to have it replaced. I have had the stove for two years. At the end of everything... he even asked to see if we would like a quote for the other fire place we need! What is the maximum output in kW of your "5kW" wood burning stove? The majority of manufacturers just specify the “nominal output” and this figure means very little in real life. The nominal is a figure the manufacturer chooses to sell the stove at - the stove is capable of reaching at least this output with one fuel load. Nominal means "capable of". But it is not the maximum.

Clean the surface that you plan on cementing with a stiff-bristled brush. Scrub the area using a dry brush, paying special attention to areas with lots of build-up. Afterwards, use a cloth to lightly wet the surface with water and clean up loose pieces. Clear all rust, dirt and debris from the area prior to application of furnace cement. Ready-mixed blend of thermos-setting resins, high quality clay and inorganic fillers which cure when exposed to heat. Ideal for all types of fire and high temperature application. Fitting a wood burning stove or fire carries no stipulation that the work cannot be carried out by a DIY enthusiast. All work however does have to comply with part J of the building regulations. These regulations can be seen in our projects section. Such work shouldn’t be carried out without a building notice having been applied for through a local authority building control office or such work signed off and certificated by a ″competent person″. It is great that they have insulated the flue liner - so often installers do not. Perhaps the register plate just needs sealing a little better. Sealing with high temperatuer silicone is really not all that bad in general, but perhaps where there are bigger gaps - asin your case - they would have been better off using something more substantial. If I were doing it I would have used mortar around the edge and slivers of slate underneath if the gap were large. The reg plate I would have used would have had a very tight seal to the flue pipe anyway. The register plate can now be fitted into the frame. The offcut of the flue pipe can be used as a template and a line drawn round it. This circle can be cut out with a jigsaw, pad saw or coping saw. The solution to both those problems is silicon sealant, like the Heatmate High Temperature Silicone Sealant we sell. Why use high temperature silicone sealant?

When you first light a stove the smoke cures and you can get that funny smell and some fumes. You should ventilate the room and keep the stove nice and hot whilst you do this. It can set off smoke alarms. Will your stove require an air vent within the room (some stone walls are very difficult to drill)? Apart from this, professionals also recommend cleaning all surfaces from dust, grease, oils, and other contaminant substances. You should take a step further and wet all the surfaces before applying the fire putty. How Long for Fire Cement to Dry? If this work is not carried out by a competant person (E.G a HETAS installer) it must be inspected by someone from your local councils Building Control Department. Solid fuel produces carbon monoxide. Beauty Advent calendars are significantly pricier than chocolate ones, but they've become increasingly popular in the last few years as a way of bagging beauty products at a fraction of the normal cost. They often sell out early, but can also be heavily discounted later if they don't, so here's a round-up of some of the best I’ve seen. Avoid furnace cements that contain asbestos. Asbestos is a set of silicate minerals that were commonly used in many American construction products. Some furnace cements that contained asbestos in the past (prior to 1980s) include Johns Manville, Hercules, and Rutland Fireclay brands.

You are right we would normally light a little fire in the stove - but you can't if you have used silicone to seal the flue joins. We would normally carry some seasoned logs or some compressed sawdust logs - something where we can be really sure that the fuel is very dry. Sounds like your installers were having a bit of an off day. Stir the cement using your knife or trowel if it isn't premixed. Mix the cement until it is a uniform consistency, which allows for easier application. If your cement is premixed, you can skip this step.

Never apply furnace cement if your home was built before the 1980s. Even if you avoid asbestos-containing furnace cements, you can still agitate microscopic fibres of asbestos minerals in older furnaces. As a rule, any apartment or home that was built before the 1980s and has not experienced renovations is a risk. For obvious reasons, you will want to make sure that the stove and flue is correctly sealed before starting to use it. Any gases and smoke produced by your woodburner need to be burnt in the firebox when flammable, then make their way up your flue pipe. Another length of fire rope is inserted into the collar and fitted around the circumference of the flue pipe. Fire cement is now rammed into the collar so there are no air voids. The joint is then smoothed off and left for a while. Fire cement goes hard when exposed to heat. Many installers use fire mastic for this joint.
